Thread Black 70 denier (140 would be better)
Materials
Mottled turkey slip Mottled brown thin skin (1 small slip (tail); duck or any flight feather substitutes)
Wool yarn White poly yarn (1 strand, separated from 3-strand yarn (body))
Tinsel Silver (holographic used here) (1 length (rib))
Bucktail Dyed blue bucktail (1 stacked tuft (wing))
Squirrel tail or bucktail Black bucktail (1 small tuft (topping))
Marabou or schlappen Red marabou (1 small tuft (throat, optional))
Head cement (1 drop)
How to tie it
Pinch the barb, start black thread mid-shank, and run a base back to the bend.
Tie in a small slip of mottled turkey at the bend for the tail with a wrap or two; leave the butt ends in place and bind them forward to help thicken the body.
A couple of eye-lengths back from the eye, tie in a single strand of white wool yarn (unwind it from three-strand yarn), then take open wraps back to the bend.
Tie in the silver tinsel at the bend as well.
Wrap the wool yarn forward in touching turns without pulling it too tight, leaving it a little loose lets it absorb more water. If it starts flattening out, give it a slight clockwise twist to cord it up. Wool pulls apart easily, so work slowly. Tie off at the front.
Spiral the tinsel forward over the wool at whatever spacing gives the flash you want; take two wraps, fold the tinsel back over itself, add two more wraps to lock it, and trim.
Stack a tuft of dyed blue bucktail and tie it in as the wing; take a wrap under the bunch, then over, then under again to keep it from rolling around the shank, then medium wraps back to lay it flat. Trim the butts at an angle.
Tie a small tuft of black squirrel tail (or black bucktail) on top as a topping and trim the butts.
Turn the fly over and tie a small tuft of red marabou or schlappen underneath as a suggestion of gills. Keep it sparse; it's optional.
Build a big streamer head, whip finish, and add a drop of head cement.
