Crab · Striped Bass · Bluefish · Jack · Tarpon · Snook · Redfish · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook saltwater stainless (Mustad 34007 / TMC 811S), 4-8
  • Thread tan 6/0

Materials

  • Craft fur or EP fibers (claws/body) Tan craft fur (1 clump)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (few strands)
  • Round rubber legs Tan/ginger rubber legs (2-3 pairs)
  • Small lead dumbbell eyes n/a (1 pair)
  • Mono weedguard Clear weed guard (1 loop)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a mono weedguard length at the bend to set aside, then tie a small clump of tan craft fur and pearl flash as the trailing claws.
  2. Palmer or dub a flat, oval tan body along the shank. Crab-shaped, wider than it is tall.
  3. Figure-8 two or three pairs of tan/ginger rubber legs along the sides so they splay out.
  4. Lash small lead dumbbell eyes on top near the front so the fly rides point-up and drops softly.
  5. Trim the body flat on the bottom and to a round crab outline, keeping it sparse so it lands soft.
  6. Fold the mono weedguard forward, tie it off at the eye, whip finish, and cement.
