Classic Recipe

  • Hook wet fly / spider hook, down-eye, 13-14
  • Thread light brown 8/0

Materials

  • Silk body Light brown Pearsall's Gossamer silk (full length of shank)
  • Dubbing/rib Sandy hare's fur (sparse)
  • Wing Sandy feather slip from a landrail (corncrake) wing (optional, tied low)
  • Hackle Dark ginger cock or hen hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Run the light brown silk from behind the eye to above the barb, then forward two-thirds.
  2. Dub sparingly with sandy hare's fur and wind a slightly rough body over the rear two-thirds of the shank to suggest the hairy sandfly.
  3. If adding a wing, tie a slim slip of sandy landrail (or substitute) low over the body, no longer than the hook.
  4. Tie in the dark ginger hackle by the tip behind the eye.
  5. Take 2 turns of hackle, secure, clip the stem, stroke fibres back, whip finish and varnish.
