Reference Recipe

  • Hook saltwater stainless, 2-6
  • Thread tan / pink 6/0

Materials

  • Bucktail (antennae) Tan/ginger bucktail (few strands)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (few strands)
  • Estaz or dubbing (body) Tan dubbing (1 length)
  • Saddle hackle (legs) Ginger/grizzly hackle (1 feather)
  • Bead chain or small lead eyes n/a (1 pair)
  • Mono/scud-back (carapace, optional) Clear weed guard (1 strip)

How to tie it

  1. Lash bead-chain or small lead eyes near the eye so the fly rides point-up.
  2. At the bend tie in a few strands of tan bucktail and pearl flash as antennae extending past the bend.
  3. Tie in a palmer hackle and a length of tan Estaz (or a dubbing brush) at the bend.
  4. Wrap the Estaz forward to behind the eyes, then palmer the hackle through it and sweep the fibers down for legs.
  5. Optional: pull a strip of clear scud-back over the top as a translucent carapace and rib it down.
  6. Build a tan head behind the eyes, whip finish, and cement.
