Reference Recipe

  • Hook saltwater stainless, short shank, 2-6
  • Thread tan flat waxed / 6/0

Materials

  • Antron (trailing egg mass) Tan/orange antron (small tuft)
  • Deer hair or EP fibers (carapace) Tan/cream deer hair or ep fibers (several clumps)
  • Bead chain or small lead eyes n/a (1 pair)
  • Round rubber legs Tan barred rubber legs medium (3-4 strands)
  • UV resin (shell) Tan-tinted (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and lash bead-chain or small lead eyes on top near the front so the hook rides point-up.
  2. At the bend tie in a small tuft of tan Antron as the trailing egg mass.
  3. Spin or stack tan deer hair to form a plump, oval body filling the shank.
  4. Trim the body to a squat, flat-bottomed egg/oval shape. A mole crab is compact.
  5. Figure-8 short tan rubber legs low on the sides, angled forward.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and cement the thread.
  7. Coat the top of the carapace with tan-tinted UV resin for a hard shell and cure.
