Hook Traditional wet fly, #8 (smaller sizes work too)
Thread Black 6/0 (Uni. Its slight roughness grips dubbing better than a slick thread)
Materials
Oval or flat tinsel Gold oval tinsel (Small or extra-small, 1 length (tag and rib))
Hare's ear fur Dark hare s ear fur (Enough for a dubbing loop body)
Hen hackle Mottled brown hen hackle (1 feather)
Head cement (1 drop)
How to tie it
Start black 6/0 thread and run a base down the shank; this is a double body, so begin the rear section well back at the bend.
Tie in the small gold tinsel at the bend, wrap a short tag, then bring the tinsel forward alongside the shank and fold it back out of the way. The same piece serves as tag and rib.
Form a dubbing loop and lock it in place at its base (an unlocked loop will work itself loose). Hang hackle pliers or a spinner from the bottom.
Wax the loop lightly, insert dark hare's ear fur, and spin it into an even rope, filling any bare spots.
Wrap the dubbing rope forward in touching turns to build a shaggy, buggy body, leaving room at the front for the hackle.
Spiral the gold tinsel forward as an evenly spaced rib and tie it off.
Prepare a mottled brown hen hackle by stripping one side and cutting a small triangular tie-in point; tie it in by the stem in front of the body.
Wrap two or three turns of the soft hen hackle using light teardrop-style hackle pliers (heavy pliers will snap a fine quill), then tie off and trim.
Whip finish a small head and add a drop of head cement.
