Reference Recipe

  • Hook saltwater stainless (Gamakatsu SC15), 1/0-2/0
  • Thread white or gray flat waxed nylon

Materials

  • Saddle hackles (tail) To match forage (4-6, paired and splayed)
  • Grizzly hackle (flanking) Grizzly hackle (2 feathers)
  • Bucktail (veil) To match bucktail (sparse clump)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (6-8 strands)
  • Webby saddle hackle (collar) To match saddle hackle (1 feather)
  • Deer hair (spun head) To match deer hair (several clumps)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base to the bend and tie in a stacked tail of 4-6 paired, splayed saddle hackles one to two shank lengths, flanked by a grizzly hackle on each side.
  2. Add a few strands of flash and a sparse bucktail veil top and bottom.
  3. Palmer a webby saddle hackle forward over the rear third to build a breathing collar and tie off.
  4. Spin a clump of deer hair around the shank and pack it back hard against the hackle.
  5. Repeat spinning and packing forward to just behind the eye, leaving thread room.
  6. Whip finish, then trim the spun hair into a rounded, water-pushing head. Flat on the bottom, fuller on top.
  7. Leave the rearmost hair tips untrimmed as a collar so the head shoves water into the tail, and give it a final trim to shape.
