Reference Recipe

  • Hook long-shank dry (TMC 5212), 4-8 (3XL)
  • Thread orange 6/0

Materials

  • Foam strip (2mm) Orange foam strip (1 strip)
  • Antron dubbing (abdomen) Burnt orange (1 rope)
  • Elk hair (wing) Natural/bleached elk hair (1 clump)
  • Round rubber legs Brown silly legs nymph size (2 strands)
  • Saddle hackle Brown or grizzly hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Cover the shank with thread and tie in an orange foam strip at the rear, leaving a short tag past the bend as a body tip.
  2. Dub a rope of orange antron over the shank to build a fat abdomen forward to the 70% mark.
  3. Pull the foam forward over the top and bind at 70%, segmenting the abdomen with 3-4 tight thread bands as you go.
  4. Stack a clump of elk hair and tie it in at 70% lying over the body, tips reaching the bend; add a drop of cement under the butts.
  5. Figure-8 brown rubber legs on each side of the wing base.
  6. Tie in a brown or grizzly hackle and take 4-5 turns through the thorax, then bind and trim.
  7. Pull the remaining foam butt forward over the thorax to form a raised head, bind behind the eye.
  8. Whip finish, trim the foam head to a short stub, and cement.
