Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook long-shank dry, 6-10 (2-3XL)
  • Thread orange 6/0

Materials

  • Foam strip (2mm, layered) Black over orange (1 strip)
  • Deer or elk hair (wing) Natural deer hair (1 clump)
  • Round rubber legs Black ostrich herl (4 strands)
  • Foam or poly sighter Orange poly yarn (small tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and tie in a two-layer foam strip (black over orange) at the rear, extending a short tag past the bend.
  2. Segment the body forward with 3-4 tight thread bands to mid-shank, keeping the orange underside showing.
  3. Stack a clump of deer or elk hair and tie it in over the body at mid-shank, tips just past the bend; trim the butts.
  4. Figure-8 black round rubber legs, two per side, splayed out.
  5. Fold the front foam over the thorax to form a raised wing pad and head, binding behind the eye.
  6. Tie a bright orange foam or poly tuft on top as a hi-vis sighter.
  7. Whip finish under the head and cement.
