Dry Fly · Trout · Grayling · Beginner · 3 versions

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 14-20
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Dun microfibbetts (split)
  • Body Rusty brown dubbing (slender)
  • Wing White poly yarn or hackle (spent)

How to tie it

  1. Mount hook, tie in split microfibbett tails, splayed wide.
  2. Dub a slender rusty-brown body to the 70% mark.
  3. Tie a length of white poly yarn across the shank at the thorax with figure-8 wraps. The wings should lie dead flat, straight out to the sides.
  4. Dub one turn over the figure-8 wraps to clean up the thorax. Whip finish.

Substitutions

  • Body instead of Rusty brown dubbing: Rusty Spinner Superfine — Exact color match; Brown/orange blended dubbing — Close to rusty tone
  • Wing instead of White poly yarn or hackle: White CDC (spent) — More natural; Clear Medallion sheeting — Realistic spent wing
