Rusty Spinner Egg Sack

Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly (TMC 100 or equivalent), 14-18
  • Thread rusty brown 8/0

Materials

  • Microfibbetts (split tails) Medium dun hackle fibers (4-6 fibers)
  • Antron or superfine dubbing (egg sac) Chartreuse or bright yellow antron superfine dubbing (tiny pinch)
  • Superfine dubbing (body) Rusty brown (thin noodle)
  • Poly yarn or organza (spent wings) White/light dun poly yarn or organza (1 small clump)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread mid-shank and lay a smooth base back to the bend.
  2. At the very rear, dub or tie a tiny bright egg ball no larger than the hook eye. Keep it small, it is only a trigger.
  3. Split 2-3 microfibbetts to each side over a small dubbing bump so the tails cock into a wide V, tails one shank length.
  4. Dub a thin, tapered rusty abdomen forward to the 65% mark. Half the dubbing you think, a spinner is slim.
  5. Lay a clump of white poly yarn across the shank and figure-8 it flat into spent wings, each wing one shank length, splayed a full 180 degrees.
  6. Dub a slightly fatter rusty thorax around the wing base to bury the figure-8 wraps.
  7. Whip finish at the eye and set a pinhead of cement on the thread head.
