Reference Recipe

  • Hook barbless jig/competition nymph hook, #14-18
  • Thread rusty brown or red 8/0

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Copper or black slotted tungsten bead (2.8-3.4mm)
  • Coq de Leon fibers (tail) Pardo (small clump)
  • Tying thread or fine tinsel (body) Rusty copper/brown (trace)
  • Hot-spot thread (collar) Fluorescent red or orange hot spot thread (trace)
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (thin coat)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the copper tungsten bead to the eye and start rusty thread behind it, base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short, sparse pardo Coq de Leon tail, three-quarters of a shank long.
  3. Build a slim, tapered rusty-copper body of thread or fine tinsel forward to just behind the bead; keep it thin so it dives fast.
  4. Add a narrow band of fluorescent red thread as a hot-spot collar right behind the bead.
  5. Whip finish and clip the thread.
  6. Coat the whole body and collar with a thin, even layer of UV resin, rotate to keep it even, and cure into a hard glassy shell.
