  • Hook 3XL dry-fly/stonefly hook (e.g. TMC 200R), #6-12
  • Thread orange 6/0

Materials

  • Elk hair (tail) Natural deer hair (small clump)
  • Dubbing (abdomen) Orange or amber dubbing (pinch)
  • Grizzly hackle (body/palmer) Brown or grizzly hackle (1 feather)
  • Elk hair (wing) Natural deer hair (clump)
  • Dubbing (thorax) Amber/yellow dubbing (pinch)
  • Grizzly hackle (thorax palmer) Grizzly hackle (1 feather)
  • Round rubber legs Barred rubber legs (1-2 pairs)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base to the bend and tie in a short elk-hair tail, half a shank long.
  2. Tie in a hackle by the tip at the bend, then dub an orange abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  3. Palmer the hackle forward over the abdomen in 5-6 open turns and tie off at the 60% mark.
  4. Stack and tie in an elk-hair wing at the 60% mark reaching to the end of the tail; secure the butts and let them help prop the wing.
  5. Figure-8 in one or two pairs of barred rubber legs alongside the thorax.
  6. Tie in a grizzly hackle, dub a fuller amber thorax to just behind the eye, then palmer the hackle through the thorax and tie off.
  7. Build a small thread head, whip finish, and cement.
