Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry-fly hook, 10-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Wings White calf tail (upright divided pair)
  • Tail Moose body hair (or brown bucktail) (1 small bunch)
  • Body Peacock herl / yellow floss / peacock herl (banded)
  • Hackle Coachman brown hackle (1-2 feathers)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread, stack white calf tail, and tie in upright divided hair wings at the 70% mark.
  2. Wrap to the bend and tie in a moose or brown bucktail tail, one shank long.
  3. Build the body: a peacock ball, a yellow floss center band, then a peacock ball, up to the wings.
  4. Tie in a brown hackle behind the wings.
  5. Wind the hackle 2-3 turns behind the wings and 2-3 in front; tie off.
  6. Whip finish and cement.
