Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 2 versions

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 10-16
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Golden pheasant tippet (sparse)
  • Body Peacock-red floss-peacock (banded)
  • Wing White calf tail (flat, swept)
  • Hackle Brown hackle (collar)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the dry hook and start black thread. Tie in a sparse golden-pheasant tippet tail about one shank long.
  2. Build the royal body: wrap a butt of peacock herl at the bend, band the middle with red floss, then a second butt of peacock herl at the front. Herl, red, herl.
  3. Tie in a bunch of white calf tail as a downwing lying flat and swept back over the body, reaching to about the bend.
  4. Tie in a brown hackle and take several turns as a full collar in front of the wing.
  5. Form a small head, whip finish and cement.
