Royal Coachman Wet Fly

Wet Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook wet-fly hook, 10-14
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Golden pheasant tippets (1 small bunch)
  • Body Peacock herl / red floss / peacock herl (banded)
  • Hackle Brown hen (soft) (1 feather)
  • Wing White duck quill slips (1 matched pair)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and wrap to the bend.
  2. Tie in a golden pheasant tippet tail, half to one shank long.
  3. Build the royal body: a peacock ball, a red floss center band, then a peacock ball, ending at 75%.
  4. Tie in a soft brown hen hackle and take 2 turns, then sweep the fibers down and back as a wet-fly beard.
  5. Pair two white duck-quill slips and bind them low over the body as a downwing, tips to the bend.
  6. Form a small head, whip finish, and cement.
