Roy's Special Emerger

Emerger · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry-fly hook (TMC 100), 18-22
  • Thread Gray 8/0 (70D)

Materials

  • Trailing shuck Rust or orange Antron/Darlon (small pinch)
  • Dubbing (body) Gray Superfine (small pinch)
  • Poly yarn (wing post) Gray antron (1 small clump)
  • Hackle Dun hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start gray thread mid-shank and wrap back to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short trailing shuck of rust Antron, no longer than half a shank and kept sparse and stubby.
  3. Return the thread forward and tie in a clump of gray poly yarn as an upright wing post at the 70% mark; stand it up with a few horizontal thread turns around the base.
  4. Tie a dun hackle in at the base of the post, shiny side up.
  5. Dub a thin gray body from the shuck forward to just past the post, half the dubbing you think, this is a tiny fly.
  6. Wind the hackle 3-4 turns down the post parachute-style and secure the tip with thread under the post; trim the excess.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye, trim the post to about one shank height, and set a tiny drop of cement at the base.
