  • Hook curved scud/pupa hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Black nickel bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Thread (body) Black thread (underbody)
  • Wire rib Silver wire (fine, 1 strand)
  • Collar Fluorescent red (floss or thread) (small band)
  • Gill tuft White poly/Antron (small pinch)
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (thin coat)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the black nickel bead on and seat it behind the eye; start black thread right behind the bead.
  2. Bind thread smoothly down the shank into the start of the bend, keeping a single thin layer. A chironomid pupa is skinny, so resist building bulk.
  3. Tie in fine silver wire at the bend, then wrap thread forward to just behind the bead as a slightly tapered body.
  4. Counter-wrap the silver wire forward in 5-7 open, evenly spaced turns for segmentation and a gunmetal shimmer; helicopter it to break.
  5. Build a short hot-red collar right behind the bead, 4-5 turns. This small hot spot is the trigger.
  6. Tie in a tiny tuft of white poly at the very front against the bead, sweeping back; trim the gills to a stub no longer than the bead.
  7. Whip finish, coat the whole body in a thin layer of UV resin, and cure to a glassy shell.
