Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/pupa, 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver or black bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Wire or holo tinsel (rib) Red tinsel (body length)
  • Peacock herl (thorax) Natural peacock herl (1-2 strands)
  • Antron/Z-lon (gills) White poly yarn (1 short tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the bead at the eye and lay a thread base back around the bend of the curve.
  2. Tie in a strand of red wire (or red holographic tinsel) at the bend for the rib.
  3. Wrap the black thread forward in smooth, slightly overlapping turns to build a thin, glossy black body up to just behind the bead.
  4. Counter-wrap the red rib forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns for segmentation; tie off and break.
  5. Tie in 1-2 peacock herls behind the bead and take 2-3 turns for a dark thorax collar; tie off.
  6. Tie a short tuft of white Antron/Z-lon over the front flush behind the bead and trim to a stub for the gills.
  7. Coat the body with thin UV resin for a durable, glassy pupa finish and whip finish.
