Rough-Bodied Poult

Wet Fly · Trout · Grayling · Beginner · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook wet fly / spider hook, down-eye, 14
  • Thread straw 8/0

Materials

  • Silk body Straw-coloured silk No. 2 (full length of shank)
  • Dubbing Buff fur from the flank, sparse and rough (pinch)
  • Hackle Light blue feather from the under-coverts of a young grouse wing (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Run the straw silk from behind the eye to above the barb, then forward two-thirds.
  2. Twist a sparse wisp of buff flank fur onto the silk and wind a deliberately rough, slightly shaggy body over the rear two-thirds of the shank. The 'rough body' is the defining feature versus the smooth Poult Bloa.
  3. Tie in the pale blue young-grouse under-covert feather by its tip behind the eye.
  4. Take 1.5 to 2 sparse turns of hackle, secure, clip the stem.
  5. Stroke fibres back, build a small head, whip finish and varnish.
