Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL nymph, 14-18
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Tungsten bead Gold or black bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Pheasant tail fibers (tail) Natural pheasant tail fibers (3-4)
  • Ultra Wire (body) Yellow, olive, brown ultra wire (1 strand each)
  • Pheasant tail (wingcase) Natural pheasant tail fibers (1 slip)
  • Dubbing (thorax) Dark brown/olive dubbing (small pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the tungsten bead at the eye and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in 3-4 pheasant tail fibers at the bend for the tail, half a shank long.
  3. Tie in strands of yellow, olive and brown Ultra Wire together at the bend, twist them into a rope, and wrap forward to the 60% mark for a multi-hued segmented abdomen; tie off and break.
  4. Tie in a slip of pheasant tail pointing rearward for the wingcase.
  5. Dub a buggy dark thorax behind the bead.
  6. Pull the pheasant-tail wingcase over the thorax and bind it behind the bead; optionally split a few tail fibers back on each side as legs.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
