  • Hook Standard dry, 12-18
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Foam strip, 2mm (shellback) Black floss (1 hook-gap-wide strip)
  • Peacock herl (body) Natural peacock herl (2-3 strands)
  • Parachute hackle Black hackle (1 feather)
  • Hi-vis yarn (post/indicator) Orange poly yarn (1 short tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread mid-shank. Cut a hook-gap-wide strip of black 2mm foam and bind its rear end at the bend so a short tag points back.
  2. Stand a short tuft of orange hi-vis yarn upright at the 60% mark and post its base with thread; this is both the sighter and the parachute post.
  3. Tie in 2-3 peacock herls at the bend and wrap them forward to the post as a fat beetle body; tie off.
  4. Tie a black hackle in at the post and take 4-5 turns horizontally around the base, parachute style.
  5. Pull the foam forward over the top to the eye to form the beetle shell and bind it down behind the eye, taking care not to trap the hackle.
  6. Trim the foam to a short head stub and the post to a hook-gap tuft.
  7. Whip finish under the hackle and cement the wraps.
