Rosenbauer's Deep Caddis Pupa

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL curved caddis/scud, 12-16
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Black nickel bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Ultra Wire (abdomen) Bright green ultra wire (body length)
  • Antron (sparkle sheath) Amber/green antron (sparse veil)
  • Deer hair or Antron (overwing/wing pads) Dark brown mink guard hair (few fibers)
  • Dubbing (thorax/collar) Brown dubbing (small pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the black bead at the eye and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in bright green Ultra Wire and wrap it forward in touching turns to the 70% mark for a segmented abdomen; tie off and helicopter to break.
  3. Tie a sparse veil of amber/green Antron over and under the abdomen, left loose so it traps air like the natural's gas sheath; trim it to about the hook point.
  4. Tie a few fibers of dark brown deer hair or Antron over the top, back to the rear of the body, to suggest the dark wing pads.
  5. Dub a short brown thorax behind the bead and sweep the fibers back.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
