Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 3 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig nymph (Hanak 400BL or Umpqua XC400BL), 12
  • Thread Dark mocha brown 8/0

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Gold bead (1, 3.8mm)
  • Micro rubber legs Root beer (grizzly barred) hackle (for tail and legs)
  • Hare's ear dubbing rope (Rabbit Dreads) Light hare's ear (abdomen length)
  • Stretch rib (Midge Stretch Rib) Olive brown bruiser blend (body length)
  • Ice dub (thorax) Golden brown ice dub (pinch)
  • UV resin (wingcase) Black floss (1 coat)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the gold bead at the eye and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a strand of root-beer micro rubber at the bend, split into a short V for the tails.
  3. Tie in the stretch rib, then wrap a hare's-ear dubbing rope forward to the 65% mark as the abdomen (the rope saves dubbing the thread).
  4. Counter-wrap the stretch rib forward in 5-6 open turns for segmentation; tie off and snip.
  5. Figure-8 a micro-rubber strand across the thorax so a pair of legs splays each side; trim to a hook gap.
  6. Dub a golden-brown ice-dub thorax around the legs up to the bead.
  7. Whip finish, then paint a wingcase over the top of the thorax with black UV resin and cure it.
