Start 140 denier black thread just behind the eye, catch in the gold wire up front, then bind it down all the way back to the start of the bend, finishing with the wire slightly off to one side.
Pick two saddle hackles whose tips will give a tail about twice the shank length, with a long section of webby fluff below the tip that will become the body.
Part the barbs of the pair of feathers to create a small bare opening at the tie-in point and secure them at the bend with two or three wraps, tail pointing back. Take care not to strip the body fluff off the stem.
Run the thread forward to about one eye-length behind the eye and leave it hanging there as a visual marker; the body fluff will hide the hook.
Stroke the body fluff up and out of the way and wrap the wire forward matuka-style in open turns, zigzagging so it traps as few barbs as possible, up to the hanging thread.
Lift the fibers for the last turn or two, then lock the wire off with several firm thread wraps (brassie wire takes a few) and snip or helicopter off the excess.
Snip the feather stems off at the front, cover the sharp wire nub with loose wraps first, then bury it and build a big streamer head.
Whip finish, then brush the trapped barbs out with a bodkin or brush to make the fly shaggy.
