Roly's Poly Crane

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig nymph (Fulling Mill 5125 or similar), 10-14
  • Thread Brown 6/0

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Copper or metallic red slotted tungsten bead (1, 3.3-3.8mm)
  • Worm/chewy chenille (tail) Brown ultra fine chenille (short stub)
  • Nymph dubbing (body) Brown dubbing (small amount)
  • UV/microflash dubbing (thorax) Brown/UV microflash dubbing (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the bead at the eye and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short stub of brown worm chenille at the bend, trailing about half a shank; leave the tip for a wormy taper.
  3. Dub a slim, slightly tapered body of brown nymph dubbing forward to mid-shank.
  4. Switch to the UV/microflash dubbing and build a slightly fuller thorax up to just behind the bead.
  5. Pick out the thorax fibers to suggest crawling legs.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
