How to tie it
Lay a base of black thread from the eye back to the start of the bend.
Tie in a roughly 1 1/2 inch piece of red floss at the bend, fold the excess back over the tie-in point, and trim the tail so it is short and noticeable. Not much past the bend.
Bring the thread forward and catch in the components in the reverse of the order you will wrap them: first the fine wire rib up front, then the light brown hackle, then three strands of peacock herl.
Wrap the thread back to the bend, leaving it hanging about mid-shank so it can trap the herl if the strands start spreading.
Wrap the three peacock herls forward in touching turns to build a full body, tie off just behind the eye, and snip the thick stems rather than breaking them.
Palmer the hackle forward in very open, widely spaced turns, only four or five turns over the whole body, and tie off at the front.
Counter-spiral the wire rib forward in four or five turns, zigzagging it through the hackle barbs to trap as few as possible, then tie off and break away the excess.
Stroke the hackle back, build a small wet-fly head, and whip finish.
Optional: singe the stray barbs around the eye with a thread burner BEFORE cementing, then add a drop of head cement.
