  • Hook Traditional down-eye wet/salmon, 4-8
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Golden pheasant tippet Orange/black barred golden pheasant tippets (small bunch for tail)
  • Peacock herl Natural peacock herl (2-3 for butt/segment)
  • Floss or wool (body) Red floss (body length)
  • Hen/soft hackle Brown hen hackle (1 feather)
  • Bucktail (wing) White bucktail (sparse clump)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread behind the eye and lay a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a small bunch of golden pheasant tippet at the bend for the tail, about a hook-gap long.
  3. Wrap 3-4 turns of peacock herl at the bend to form a dark ant segment; bind and snip.
  4. Tie in red floss or wool and wrap a slim body forward to the 75% mark; tie off and snip.
  5. Tie in a brown soft hackle and take 2-3 turns as a wet collar; sweep the fibers down and back and lock them.
  6. Tie a sparse clump of white bucktail flat over the top for the wing, reaching to about the bend; snip the butts.
  7. Build a small head, whip finish, and cement.
