How to tie it
Make the extended body on a lightly-waxed needle: start thread leaving a long tag, tie in a bunch of blue bucktail by the tips (a few loose wraps then tighter ones), and massage the hair to spread it around the whole needle.
Split the hair roughly in half and fold it back on itself to form the very tip of the tail; make a few tight thread wraps, add a dab of varnish, and spin the thread flat to leave a wide black band.
Repeat up the needle making about five or six banded segments, adding a dab of varnish each time to stiffen the tail; whip finish leaving a long tag, varnish the last knot, then wiggle and slide the finished cylindrical body off the needle.
Move to the #12 wide-gape hook, start thread behind the eye, and tie the eyes in longitudinally along the shank then tighten so they seat upright; figure-eight around them, then run the thread back and add a dab of varnish to lock the eyes.
Tie the extended body in at the rear, making sure to catch the two long thread tags that hold the tail together, and wrap forward building a firm underbody; trim it to seat neatly behind the eyes.
Tie in a trimmed strip of thin (2 mm) black foam at the rear to become the thorax cover, then run the thread back down.
Strip the base of a grizzly and a blue hackle and tie both in by their stems with a cross-wrap; wrap the two hackles together in a spiral up to the thorax and tie them off.
Pull the black foam forward over the thorax as a wing case and secure it, tie in the blue-dun hackle tips as wings, then pull the remaining foam over to form the head; whip finish and add a dab of varnish.
