Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Gamakatsu SL45 bonefish hook, #4-8
  • Thread Tan (or to match color) Veevus 140 Power Thread

Materials

  • Painted lead eyes To match dumbbell eyes (1 pair)
  • Northern bucktail Tan/olive/pink/rootbeer northern bucktail (tail/wing)
  • Krystal Flash Pearl/pink flash (few strands)
  • Rabbit dubbing To match body (body)
  • Zap-A-Gap (as needed)
  • Solarez UV resin (Thin) Clear uv resin (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Start Veevus 140 on the SL45 hook and tie a pair of painted lead eyes on top of the shank about one-third back from the eye so the fly rides hook-point up. Lock them with X-wraps and a touch of Zap-A-Gap.
  2. Wrap thread to the bend. Turn the hook point-up and tie in a clump of large northern bucktail for the tail/wing, roughly one and a half shank-lengths long.
  3. Add a few strands of Krystal Flash over the bucktail.
  4. Dub a rabbit-dubbing body forward from the bend, building it up around and in front of the lead eyes for a shrimpy, crabby profile; pick out the dubbing to suggest legs.
  5. Whip finish at the head and coat the thread wraps at the eyes with Solarez UV Thin; cure.
