Reference Recipe

  • Hook Tiemco 2499SPBL (short-shank scud/emerger hook), 14-18
  • Thread White (body) and black (head) White UTC 70 / black 14/0 Veevus

Materials

  • Glass bead Red bead (1 small (thorax))
  • India hen back fibers Natural partridge (small clump (tail))
  • Super Hair Black ep fiber (single strand (rib))
  • Flashback tinsel Pearl flashabou (medium, one strand (casing))
  • Fluorofibre White fluorofibre (20-30 strands (casing/legs))
  • UV resin (Loon thick fly finish)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a small red glass bead onto a TMC 2499SPBL and start white UTC 70 thread at about the middle of the shank near the bend.
  2. Tie in a small clump of natural India hen back fibers for the tail, about the length of the straight portion of the shank, and trim the butts.
  3. Tie in a single strand of black Super Hair along the side of the fly and bind it back down toward the bend.
  4. Wind the thread forward, building a slight tapered underbody and leaving room up front for the bead.
  5. Counter-wrap the black Super Hair forward in evenly spaced spirals to form the rib; tie it off up front.
  6. Tie in a strand of medium pearl flashback tinsel on top of the shank.
  7. Tie in a generous clump (about 20-30 strands) of white fluorofibre directly on top of the flashback.
  8. Slide the red glass bead rearward into the thorax position and take a few thread wraps in front of and behind it to seat it.
  9. Tie in black 14/0 Veevus at the head, then pull the white fluorofibre forward over the top of the bead and lock it down.
  10. Pull the pearl flashback forward over the top as well and secure it at the head.
  11. Split the forward fluorofibre into two equal halves, one down each side, to form the legs, then whip finish.
  12. Trim the legs to just past the length of the thorax. Coat the body and the shell casing (and underside) with thick Loon UV resin and cure with a UV light.
