Materials

  • Lead wire (.025, 28 wraps)
  • Brass dumbbell eyes (medium) Gold dumbbell eyes (1 pair)
  • UV Ice Dub Brown dubbing (dubbing ball)
  • Ostrich herl Brown permanent marker (3 per side (tail), 8 (wing))

How to tie it

  1. Wrap 28 turns of.025 lead wire on the TMC 5263 and lock it in place. Start dark-brown Ultra Thread 210 and tie a pair of medium gold brass dumbbell eyes near the front so the fly rides point-up; cover the lead.
  2. At the bend, dub a small ball of brown UV Ice Dub to flare the tail.
  3. Tie in three brown ostrich herls on each side of the dubbing ball for a splayed tail.
  4. Tie in a grizzly-brown rooster saddle hackle by the tip and a length of large flat pearl tinsel at the bend.
  5. Wrap the flat pearl tinsel forward to the eyes as a flashy underbody and tie off.
  6. Palmer the saddle hackle forward over the tinsel body in open turns and tie off behind the eyes.
  7. Tie in a wing of about 8 brown ostrich herls over the top, then 8 strands of rootbeer Crystal Flash over the wing.
  8. Tie in two brown-barred-black rubber legs on each top side, build a dubbed head around the dumbbell eyes, whip finish and cement.
