Reference Recipe

  • Hook Intruder shank with trailing stinger hook on wire loop, 1/0-2 (trailer hook) on a 40mm shank
  • Thread To match color (pink, purple, or black) 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Intruder shank, 40mm - (1)
  • Stinger hook + braided wire loop - (1)
  • Estaz / Cactus Chenille (bumps) Opal pink and purple estaz cactus chenille (1 length each)
  • Saddle hackle Pink and purple saddle hackle (2)
  • Marabou (collars) Pink and purple marabou (2 plumes)
  • Flat diamond braid (body) Silver oval tinsel (1 length)
  • Flash Pink/purple flash (few strands)

How to tie it

  1. Lash a loop of braided wire along the shank and thread on the stinger hook so it trails about one shank-length behind, riding point-up; bind the loop down firmly.
  2. At the rear of the shank, wind a short bump of opal pink Estaz to build the tail platform.
  3. Tie in a pink saddle hackle by the tip and wind 3-4 turns as a splayed rear hackle, then add a pink marabou collar swept back and a few strands of flash.
  4. Wrap flat silver diamond braid forward over the mid-shank to form the body.
  5. Wind a front bump of purple Estaz.
  6. Tie in a purple saddle and wind a front hackle, then add a purple marabou front collar swept back over the body.
  7. Build a neat thread head, whip finish, and cement; the finished fly should swim near five inches with lots of breathing motion.
