Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/pupa hook, 8-16
  • Thread Black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Black nickel bead Black nickel bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Lead-free wire (weight) - (12 wraps)
  • Ultra Wire, small (rib) Copper wire (1 length)
  • Scintilla or Ice Dub (body) Chroma green (1 pinch)
  • Flashabou (back/wingcase) Olive thin skin mottled (few strands)
  • Hungarian partridge (legs) Brown hen hackle (1 feather)
  • Hare's mask dubbing (head) Black dubbing (1 pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the black-nickel bead to the eye, add 12 wraps of lead-free wire behind it, and shove them into the bead; start thread and lock the wraps.
  2. Bind the copper wire and a few strands of olive Flashabou at the bend, leaving the Flashabou pointing back to be pulled forward later.
  3. Dub a plump chroma-green body forward to just behind the bead.
  4. Pull the olive Flashabou flat over the top as a shellback and rib the copper wire forward over it in 5-6 open turns; tie off and snip.
  5. Tie a small bunch of brown partridge fibers under the throat as legs, reaching to the hook point.
  6. Dub a short black hare's mask head behind the bead over the leg butts.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
