Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavy-wire salmon/steelhead dry hook (e.g. Ahrex), 4-8
  • Thread Black or hot orange 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Deer or elk hair (body/wing) Natural/dyed deer hair (2-3 bunches)
  • Closed-cell foam, 2-3mm (buoyant head) Black/orange closed cell foam mm (1 strip)
  • Saddle hackle To taste (1)
  • Poly yarn / Antron (sighter hot spot) Hot pink or orange poly yarn antron (small tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread mid-shank and tie in a slim, sparse deer-hair tail/rear body pointing back one shank length, kept low and thin so the rear rides in the surface film.
  2. Wrap a slender deer-hair or dubbed body forward to the 60% mark.
  3. Tie in and wind a saddle hackle in 3-4 turns as a collar at the 60% mark for a low waking wake, then tie off.
  4. Build the buoyant head: stack and bind a large bunch of deer hair (or fold a foam strip) at the front so it flares into a broad, high-floating head; a fat head keeps the fly planted and skating without diving.
  5. Add a small tuft of hot-colored poly yarn on top of the head as an angler sighter.
  6. Trim the head into a rounded, forward-facing dome that pushes water when skated.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye and cement.
