Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL nymph or jig hook, 12-16
  • Thread Brown or black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Copper or gold slotted tungsten bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Pheasant tail fibers (tails) Natural pheasant tail fibers (small bunch)
  • Pheasant tail fibers (abdomen) Natural pheasant tail fibers (small bunch)
  • Ultra Wire (rib) Copper wire (1 length)
  • Peacock herl or dark dubbing (thorax) Peacock ice dub (1-2 herls)
  • Pheasant tail fibers (wingcase) Natural pheasant tail fibers (small bunch)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the slotted tungsten bead to the eye and add a few wraps of lead-free wire behind it for extra weight; start thread and cover the wire.
  2. Tie in a short pheasant-tail-fiber tail at the bend, about half a shank long.
  3. Bind the copper wire at the bend, then wrap a bunch of pheasant tail fibers forward as the abdomen to the 60% mark.
  4. Counter-rib the copper wire forward in 5-6 open turns to armor and segment the abdomen, then helicopter it off.
  5. Tie in a fresh bunch of pheasant tail pointing forward for the wingcase, then wrap a peacock herl thorax to just behind the bead.
  6. Fold the wingcase over the thorax and bind it behind the bead.
  7. Snip the excess, whip finish behind the bead, and cement.
