Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook (e.g. TMC 100), 8
  • Thread Coffee/brown 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Closed-cell foam, 2mm (body) Orange foam strip (1 strip, one hook-gap wide)
  • Thread (rib) Coffee/brown (-)
  • Elk or deer hair (wing) Natural deer hair (1 stacked clump)
  • Closed-cell foam, 2mm (head/nose) Tan fly tying foam (1 short tab)
  • Saddle hackle Brown and medium ginger saddle hackle (1 of each)

How to tie it

  1. Start coffee thread mid-shank and tie in a strip of orange foam at the 75% mark so it extends one shank length past the bend as the body.
  2. Spiral the thread back over the foam and rib it forward in 5-6 open turns to segment the orange body, stopping at the 75% mark.
  3. Stack a clump of elk or deer hair and tie it tent-style over the body, tips reaching just past the bend; snip the butts square.
  4. Tie in a brown and a ginger saddle hackle by their butts just ahead of the wing.
  5. Wind both hackles together forward in 4-5 turns to make a mixed collar and tie off.
  6. Fold a short tan foam tab over the front as a blunt head/nose and bind it behind the eye.
  7. Whip finish under the foam head and add a drop of cement.
