Reference Recipe

  • Hook Up-eye streamer/bass hook, 2-6
  • Thread Brown or tan 210 denier

Materials

  • Deer belly hair (body) Natural brown/tan deer belly hair (several bunches)
  • Closed-cell foam, 2mm (back strip) Brown thin foam (1 strip)
  • Pine squirrel strip or thin foam (tail) Brown squirrel strips (1 strip)

How to tie it

  1. On the up-eye hook, start thread at the bend and tie in a thin tail strip about one shank length long.
  2. Bind a brown foam strip at the bend on top, pointing rearward, to form the back later.
  3. Spin a bunch of deer belly hair and pack it back firmly against the tail tie-in.
  4. Continue spinning and packing flared deer hair forward to the 85% mark, keeping bunches dense so the head throws a wake.
  5. Whip finish, remove the fly, and trim the body flat underneath and rounded on top, leaving the front slightly taller as a broad wake-making head.
  6. Pull the foam back forward over the trimmed top and re-tie at the up-eye to lock it down.
  7. Form a small head, whip finish, cement, and square off the foam nose.
