RIO's Morrish Micro Jig Sculpin

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Barbless jig streamer hook, 60-degree eye, 8-12
  • Thread Olive or tan 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Copper or black slotted tungsten bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Pine squirrel strip or marabou (tail/body) Sculpin olive or tan (1 short strip)
  • Ice Dub or Krystal Flash (flash) Copper/pearl dubbing (few strands)
  • Sculpin wool or mottled dubbing (head/collar) Olive/tan mottled sculpin wool or dubbing (1 pinch)
  • Barred rubber or Sili legs (legs, optional) Olive emu feather (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the slotted tungsten bead onto the jig hook and seat it at the eye; start thread behind it.
  2. Tie in a short pine squirrel strip or marabou tail at the bend, no longer than one shank length, to keep the profile compact.
  3. Add a few strands of copper flash along the tail, trimmed to the tail tips.
  4. Wrap the remaining squirrel or marabou forward as a slim body to the 70% mark and tie off.
  5. Figure-8 a pair of short rubber legs at the 70% mark if used, splayed to the sides.
  6. Dub a buggy sculpin-wool collar behind the bead and pick it out to suggest the broad sculpin head and pectoral flare.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and add a drop of cement.
