Cut a tapered foam strip about 1.5 shank lengths long (orange under, dark over if layering) and segment an extended body off the back with 3-4 tight thread bands so it reaches one shank length past the bend.
Bind the foam body onto the shank, wrapping forward and back to the 60% mark to seat it flat on top.
Stack a bunch of dark deer hair and bind it flat over the body as a wing, tips reaching just past the bend. The buoyant hair and foam keep it riding high in rough water.
Lay 4-6 strands of pearl Krystal Flash under the wing for the fluttering-adult sheen and trim to wing length.
Add rubber legs in two pairs, one at each side, figure-8'd at the front of the body so they splay and kick.
Fold the remaining foam forward over the thorax to form a slim head (stoneflies have narrow heads, so keep it tight) and lock it down just behind the eye, adding a final pair of legs at the head if desired.
Whip finish under the foam head and cement the wraps. Trim the legs to about one shank length.
