Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL-3XL heavy nymph/caddis hook (e.g. Daiichi 1720), 6-8
  • Thread orange 6/0

Materials

  • Tungsten bead Black nickel (4mm) (1)
  • Lead-free wire (.035) Natural lead wire (10-15 turns)
  • Hareline dubbing Orange ice dub (abdomen)
  • Vinyl rib, medium Amber vinyl rib medium (1 length)
  • Flashabou Pearl flashabou (8 strands)
  • Hen tips Brown hen hackle (2 (wings))
  • Hungarian partridge Natural partridge (1 feather)
  • Pheasant tail fibers Natural pheasant tail fibers (2 (antennae))
  • UV dubbing Rusty orange / black (collar and head)

How to tie it

  1. Crimp the barb and slide the black tungsten bead to the eye. Wrap 10-15 turns of.035 lead-free wire, shove them into the bead, and start thread behind to lock the wire.
  2. Bind the amber vinyl rib in at the 30% mark and run thread back to the bend.
  3. Dub a fat, meaty orange abdomen, October caddis pupae are chunky, forward to about the 70% mark.
  4. Spiral the vinyl rib forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns to segment the body, tie off and snip.
  5. Bind 8 strands of pearl Flashabou over the top and trim to half a body length for a sparse flash veil.
  6. Tie a short brown hen tip low on each side as stubby wings, no longer than the thorax, then take one full turn of partridge as a soft-hackle collar and sweep the fibers back.
  7. Lay two pheasant tail fibers over the top as antennae reaching to the tail, dub a rusty-orange/black collar and head into the bead, whip finish and cement.
