RIO's King Splitsville Spinner

Dry Fly · Trout · Grayling · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-20
  • Thread Rusty brown or to match 12/0

Materials

  • Microfibbetts Dun or cream microfibbetts (split tails)
  • Fine dry-fly dubbing or biot Rusty/olive to match (abdomen)
  • Rooster hackle Dun or grizzly rooster hackle (1 feather (Splitsville brush))
  • Fine dubbing Thorax shade (thorax)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and split two or three microfibbetts to each side at the bend for the tails, spread wide.
  2. Dub or wrap a slim segmented abdomen forward over the rear two-thirds of the shank.
  3. Catch a doubled loop of thread in front of the abdomen and lock it upright with backward wraps as the hackle post.
  4. Tie in a dun or grizzly hackle dull-side up and wrap it up and down the thread loop over the length of the thorax, then tie down the tip.
  5. Dub a small thorax in front of the hackle brush, stopping short of the eye.
  6. Pull the loaded hackle loop forward and flat over the thorax and bind it behind the eye so the fibers splay wide to each side as spent wings.
  7. Whip finish and add a tiny drop of cement.
