  • Hook 1XL curved nymph hook (e.g. Daiichi 1560), 14-20
  • Thread brown 8/0

Materials

  • Glass bead (or red tungsten) Red bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Pheasant tail (tail) Natural pheasant tail fibers (4-6 fibers)
  • Mylar tinsel (abdomen casing) Pearl mylar tinsel (medium, 1 strand)
  • Ultra wire (rib) Red wire (small, 1 strand)
  • Peacock herl (thorax) Natural peacock herl (1-2 strands)
  • Krystal Flash (legs) Red holographic tinsel (2-3 strands)

How to tie it

  1. Debarb, slide the red bead to the eye, and start the thread behind it, laying a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in 4-6 pheasant tail fiber tips as a short tail at the bend, about half a shank long.
  3. Bind in the small red wire and a length of medium pearl tinsel at the bend, then build a slim tapered thread abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  4. Pull the pearl tinsel over the top of the abdomen as a shell and tie it off at 60%, then counter-wrap the red wire forward in 5-6 open turns and secure.
  5. Tie in 1-2 peacock herls and wrap a plump little thorax up to just behind the bead; tie off.
  6. Tie 2-3 strands of red Krystal Flash along each side as legs and trim them roughly to the length of the thorax.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and add a drop of head cement.
