Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook (Eric FW501), 12-16
  • Thread White (or to match) 50D GSP (Veevus)

Materials

  • Antron Light sparkle antron (shuck)
  • UV2 nymph dubbing Pale olive (caddis)
  • CDC feathers Natural cdc feathers (2)
  • Razor foam Thin strip
  • Elk hair Bleached elk hair (small clump)

How to tie it

  1. Start GSP thread on an Eric FW501 size 14 dry-fly hook and run it back to the bend.
  2. Tie in a small piece of light sparkle antron on top of the shank at the bend as a trailing shuck, keeping it full-bodied; stop the tie-in where the body will start.
  3. Dub a slim tapered body of pale-olive caddis-nymph UV2 dubbing forward to about the halfway point of the shank (this water-absorbing dubbing lets the rear ride low).
  4. Tie in a natural CDC feather over the top as an underwing, leaving a light tuft, and trim the excess.
  5. Tie in a thin strip of razor foam and palmer it forward over the thorax, then tie off and taper-trim.
  6. Cut the tip from a second, larger CDC feather, pull it forward over the top and tie it in as a second underwing layer.
  7. Cut, clean and stack a small clump of bleached elk hair; tie it in on top as the wing with two or three tightening wraps (don't over-tighten the GSP or it cuts the hair), splaying the butts and leaving the tips long and slightly bushy over the body. Trim the butt ends.
  8. Trim the antron shuck to a ragged length, whip finish and cement.
