Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Wide-gap bass hook (straight-eye), 2/0
  • Thread Green or black (to match foam) GSP or flat waxed nylon

Materials

  • Dumbbell / lead eyes Painted dumbbell eyes medium (1 pair (counterweight))
  • Closed-cell foam sheet (sliced/layered) Frog green or black (Several strips)
  • Round rubber legs Barred frog (2 pairs)
  • Doll / plastic eyes Yellow-black material (1 pair)
  • UV resin or epoxy Clear uv resin (Belly coat)
  • Hard mono Clear weed guard (1 length for weed guard)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the wide-gap hook and start the thread. Lash a pair of dumbbell eyes to the shank as a counterweight, positioned so the finished fly rolls upright and rides hook-point-up.
  2. Bind stacked/sliced foam strips along the shank to build the frog's body, layering to shape the head, back and hips.
  3. Tie in two pairs of rubber legs at the hips so they splay and kick when stripped.
  4. Set the plastic eyes on top of the head so they sit up out of the water at rest.
  5. Trim the foam to a frog profile, leaving the head and eyes high and the rear low.
  6. Tie in and fold a hard-mono weed guard from the eye back under the hook point so it fishes snag-free through cover.
  7. Coat the belly with UV resin or epoxy to form a keel, whip finish, and cement the head.
