Reference Recipe

  • Hook long-shank light-wire dry-fly hook, 6-10
  • Thread tan 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • 2mm fly foam (top deck) Gold/tan mm fly foam (1 strip, one hook-gap wide)
  • 2mm fly foam (belly) Brown thin foam (1 strip, one hook-gap wide)
  • Krystal Flash (wing flash) Pearl flashabou (a few strands)
  • Poly yarn or organza (wing) Natural dun poly yarn or organza (1 clump)
  • Barred rubber legs Golden/brown rubber legs (2 strands)
  • Rooster hackle (rear) Brown hackle (1 feather)
  • Rooster hackle (front) Grizzly hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Run a thread base the length of the shank.
  2. Stack a gold foam strip over a brown foam strip, each about one hook-gap wide, and bind the doubled strip at the bend with the brown side down. The two colors give the two-tone body; keep the deck slender so it does not overload the light-wire hook.
  3. Tie in the brown rear hackle at the bend and take 3-4 open turns forward over the rear third, then tie off. The rear hackle floats the abdomen.
  4. Pull the foam forward and lock it with a tight thread band at the 60% mark to form a body segment; leave the front tag long for the head.
  5. Tie a rubber leg on each side at that segment, splayed, and trim each to about one shank length.
  6. Stack the wing over the body: lay pearl Krystal Flash first, then a natural-dun poly or organza wing cut to a rounded tip reaching just past the bend.
  7. Tie in the grizzly front hackle and take 3-4 turns through the thorax, then tie off.
  8. Pull the remaining foam tag over to form a short head deck, bind it behind the eye, trim to a stub, whip finish, and cement.
