Poly yarn (split wing) White poly yarn (1 small clump)
Rooster hackle Brown or grizzly hackle (1 feather)
Barred rubber legs Tan/brown rubber legs barred (2 strands)
How to tie it
Lock a smooth thread base from the eye back to the bend.
Cut a thin strip of 2mm foam about one hook-gap wide. Bind it at the bend with a tag pointing back, then spiral the thread forward in about 5 open turns, rolling and binding the foam up to the 65% mark. That spiraled belly gives the color and segmentation; leave the long front tag loose. It becomes the shellback.
Tie in a clump of white poly yarn upright at the 65% mark, then figure-8 through it to split it into two posts. Keep it short, about one shank length tall.
Pull the long foam tag forward over the top as a shellback and bind it down just behind the eye. This foam shell pulled over the top is what floats the fly high.
Tie a barred rubber leg on each side at the wing, angled back, one strand per side, and trim each to reach about the hook point.
Tie in the hackle by its butt behind the wing, palmer 4-5 turns through the thorax, and tie off at the eye for float and a buggy look.
Trim the foam shellback to a short head stub, whip finish under the head, and add a drop of cement. Clear any hackle crowding the eye.
