Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 18-22 (up to 16)
  • Thread Black or olive 10/0-12/0

Materials

  • Tying thread (body) Black / olive tying thread (Body)
  • CDC Dun / white cdc (1-2 tips for wing/post)
  • Dry-fly hackle Grizzly or dun hackle (1 feather)
  • Fine wire or thread (rib) Silver wire (1 strand (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Mount the small dry-fly hook and lay a thin, smooth thread base from behind the eye to the bend.
  2. Build a slim, slightly tapered thread body forward to the 70% point, adding an optional fine wire rib for segmentation.
  3. At the 70% point tie in a short upright CDC puff as a wing/post, then tie in a dry-fly hackle by its stem behind the wing.
  4. Dub or leave a slim thread thorax around the hackle base.
  5. Wind the hackle in three or four turns through the thorax, splitting it fore and aft of the CDC wing to give a low, buoyant footprint, and tie off.
  6. Trim the hackle flat underneath if a lower-riding profile is wanted.
  7. Form a small thread head, whip finish and add a tiny drop of head cement, keeping glue off the CDC.
