Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Ahrex NS118 (4XL streamer), #4
  • Thread Clear/white Danville Mono 0.006 in

Materials

  • Lead eyes (heavy, nickel) Nickel dumbbell eyes (1 pair (medium 4mm))
  • Zonker strip (1/8 in) To match zonker strip (1 (tail/wing))
  • SF Blend To match sf blend (body (V-tied))
  • Flashabou Minnow Body (medium) Pearl flashabou (cheeks)
  • Mallard flank Natural mallard flank (cheeks)
  • Strung Fuzzy Fiber blended with Wing-n-Flash To match lateral scale (head)

How to tie it

  1. Start Danville mono thread on the Ahrex NS118 and tie a pair of medium heavy nickel lead eyes near the front so the fly rides point-up; lock with X-wraps.
  2. At the bend, tie in a 1/8-inch zonker strip as the tail/wing, about one and a half shank-lengths long.
  3. Build the body by V-tying (tying in bundles top and bottom) with SF Blend up the shank to form a broad baitfish profile; keep the mono thread flat.
  4. Tie a strip of pearl Flashabou Minnow Body along each side as a cheek/lateral flash.
  5. Tie a mallard flank feather over each cheek for a mottled, natural side.
  6. Just behind the lead eyes, tie in a collar of Strung Fuzzy Fiber blended with Wing-n-Flash, distributed around the shank, and sweep it back to form a bulky head.
  7. Build a thread head at the eyes, whip finish and cement; brush the head fibers back and trim to shape if needed.
