Tinsel Silver oval tinsel (Small, for the first tag)
Floss Black floss (Short length for the second tag)
Wool White poly yarn (One strand for the body)
Hen hackle Brown hen hackle (1 feather, tied as a throat)
Mallard quill or flank Grey mallard quill or flank (1 matched wing slip)
Head cement Clear head cement (1 drop)
How to tie it
Start black thread partway down the shank and wrap back toward the bend, leaving enough room to work. The wool body will hide any unevenness underneath.
Tie in the small silver tinsel at the rear and wrap a short first tag, then tie it off and trim.
Tie in the black floss just ahead of the tinsel tag. Wrap it back over the front edge of the tinsel and then forward again, building a second tag of black floss so the two tags sit one behind the other. Tie off and trim.
Tie in the white wool at the front of the black tag and wrap it forward, then back to the tag, then forward again. Three passes. Use the extra passes to fill any hollows and even out the underbody; this is the advantage of a wool body.
Stop the body a couple of eye-lengths short of the eye so you have room for the throat and wing.
Tie in a brown hen hackle as a beard/throat underneath the shank, fibers reaching back to about the hook point.
Even up the tips of a grey mallard wing slip and tie it in on top, the wing running about one hook-length long or a smidge longer. Make sure it sits centred on top of the shank.
Trim the butts, build a small tapered head, whip finish and add a drop of head cement.
